- Questions and Answers
- ---------------------
-
- This section contains the most common questions and their answers.
- In some cases, it is useful to read the EXPERT.DOC file on this
- disk to better understand what is going on.
-
- ---
-
- Q. I can't get the Lookup County option to change from Y to N?
-
- A. Use PgUp, PgDn or the space bar. Press F1 when you get stuck
- like this, the answer is there.
-
- ---
-
- Q. I exported some calls to the Screen in Window format and nothing
- is happening. I see a menu, but no window.
-
- A. Press the space bar to see the Next Call.
-
- ---
-
- Q. I am trying to export all the hams in MARIN county California.
- My disk is running, but nothing is coming up on my screen. I
- don't know if I'm doing it right.
-
- A. County lookup slows the search down considerably. We are talking
- hours and hours for this kind of export. If you need to use
- county in your filtered export, use a RAM disk as discussed in
- EXPERT.DOC?
-
- Before trying a search of this scale, make sure you have worked
- out how to do it by looking for some calls that come up quickly.
- Search for zip code 63109, or KS state, etc.
- ---
-
- Q. I have entered my novice callsign, which shows up on the screen.
- Now I have my extra class call. How do I change the one on the
- screen?
-
- A. Edit the HAMBASE.CFG file with EDIT or TED. Change the line
- OWNER=KF6HGI to OWNER=AC6GD
- ---
-
- Q. Why are there only a few silent keys showing up at the beginning
- of the file in BROWSE NAMES? Shouldn't there be more?
-
- A. A few are entered without a name, so they are at the beginning
- of the list. Most show up under their name.
-
- ---
-
- Q. I get the message "File date does not match index date" when I
- try to BROWSE by NAME. What does this mean.
-
- A. If the date of your data file HAMBASE.A... or CANADA.A... is changed
- by a copy program or some other program, HamBase will refuse to browse
- by name. This was designed to prevent you from indexing into the file
- with the wrong index which would probably cause the computer to crash.
- If you are sure that the file is correct, but the date is wrong, you
- can correct the date with the SETFDATE.COM utility we have provided.
-
- ---
-
- Q. When merging the data sets, I get a message asking me to insert
- HAMBASE.Q, but my disks only go to HAMBASE.P. What's wrong?
-
- A. An error has occurred reading one of your data files resulting
- in the installation program expecting more bytes. Perhaps you
- inserted an incorrect disk, or perhaps the disk contains a data
- error. Either way, the new data will not be perfect, and BROWSE
- NAMES will not work. Try and load the data again. Look at the
- file sizes on the disks to see if you can identify a problem. Try
- copying the data to another diskette or the hard drive. We have
- a limited number of old data disks left, but after they are gone,
- it will be necessary to purchase a full data set. We will credit
- you for the unused UPDATE.
-
- ---
-
- Q. I am using DXBase ( or some other logging program ), and I get an
- "out of memory" error when I try to look something up in the new
- HamBase. This didn't happen before...
-
- HamBase 3.x requires more memory than version 2.x did. When the
- next release of DXBase is shipped, it will give HamBase enough
- memory to operate. In the meantime, you can use one of several
- utilities available to provide more memory to programs when they
- swap. We recommend a utility called SHROOM. It is shareware and
- can be found on the Mountain Retreat BBS. (408) 335-4595. The
- latest version at this time is SHROOM2A.EXE, but that could change
- at any time. The author maintains the latest version on CompuServe
- GO IBMSYS Library 3 at all times.
-
- The other solution is to use one of the older versions of HamBase
- such as 2.62 which is on the Program Disk. It is not as pretty,
- and won't look up calls in the NEW file, but it will find everything
- else, and takes less memory to run.
-
- ---
-
- Q. When I use HBPopUp it says that it is version 2.x, and does not
- have the browse features, etc. Is there a 3.0 version of the TSR?
-
- A. The latest version of HBPopUp is version 2. It will look up the
- latest data in the HAMBASE and UPDATE files. It will also look in
- the HBTEXT files, but won't search the HBNEW file, and does not
- include the new features of HamBase 3.0. We considered making
- a new version of the TSR, but decided that it would just take too
- much memory to be practical. Most TSR users only want to use the
- simple callsign lookup feature anyway. If you want to have HamBase 3.0
- available as a TSR, you can use DesqView to switch between multiple
- applications. You can also use programs like LiteSwitch to make any
- program into a TSR. LiteSwitch is available from Solution Design
- 404 539-0024. Check with them for current prices.
